Christian Tamburini, Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography
Christian Tamburini is a microbial deep-sea oceanographer who studies activity and diversity of meso- and bathypelagic prokaryotes, taking into account in situ high-pressure conditions (leading the MIO HP-Lab). He is interested in understanding the processes influencing the biological carbon pump, in particular the role of prokaryotes into the degradation of organic matter in the water column. He used in situ and lab experiments under high hydrostatic pressure to understand the effect of pressure on microbes. Another major goal is to explore the importance of bioluminescence in the deep sea.
